Frequently asked questions
During your first visit, we'll conduct a comprehensive health assessment, discuss your medical history, and perform a physical examination. The actual acupuncture treatment involves the gentle insertion of sterile, single-use needles at specific points on your body. Most people feel minimal to no discomfort. The needles remain in place for 20-40 minutes while you relax in a comfortable position. Your first session typically lasts 60-90 minutes.
The number of sessions needed varies depending on your condition, its severity, and how your body responds. Acute conditions may see improvement in just 2-4 sessions, while chronic issues might require 8-12 treatments or more. We typically recommend starting with weekly sessions, then spacing them out as you improve. After an initial evaluation, we'll provide a personalized treatment plan with a recommended number of sessions.
Yes, acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a licensed, trained practitioner. We use only sterile, single-use needles that are disposed of after each treatment. Our acupuncturists are fully licensed and have completed extensive training. Side effects are minimal but may include minor bruising or temporary soreness at needle sites. Serious complications are extremely rare when treatment is provided by a qualified professional.
Acupuncture is effective for a wide range of conditions. We specialize in back pain, neck pain, and sciatica, but also treat many other issues including migraines, arthritis, stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, and women's health issues. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as effective for over 50 conditions. During your consultation, we'll assess whether acupuncture is appropriate for your specific health concerns.
Most people feel little to no pain during acupuncture. The needles are much finer than injection needles (about the width of a human hair). You may feel a slight prick or tingling sensation upon insertion, followed by a mild ache, warmth, or heaviness around the needle—this is a desired therapeutic response called "de qi." Many patients find acupuncture sessions relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment.
We accept many major insurance plans that cover acupuncture. Please contact our office with your insurance information, and we'll verify your benefits before your first visit. We also accept HSA and FSA payments. For those without insurance coverage, we offer competitive self-pay rates and package discounts for multiple sessions.
To get the most from your treatment: 1) Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment (don't come on an empty stomach), 2) Avoid caffeine for at least 2 hours before treatment, 3) Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up to access your arms and legs, 4) Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment, and 5) Bring a list of any medications or supplements you're taking.
We require 24 hours notice for appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. We understand that emergencies happen, so exceptions may be made for illness or unforeseen circumstances. Please call or email us as soon as possible if you need to change your appointment so we can offer the time slot to another patient.
Initial consultations and treatments typically last 60-75 minutes. Follow-up sessions are generally 45-60 minutes. The actual needle retention time is usually 20-40 minutes, depending on your condition. We always allocate enough time for a brief check-in about your progress, the treatment itself, and any questions you may have after the session.
